Writing
At our school, we place great importance on developing children’s writing skills, beginning with a strong foundation in speaking and listening. In the Early Years, we prioritise communication and language, helping pupils to build a rich vocabulary and the confidence to express themselves. Across the school, we use approaches such as Talk for Writing and collaborative Sentence Stacking, which enable children to rehearse their ideas orally before writing them down. We also use a range of high-quality stimuli—such as engaging texts, images, film clips and real-life experiences—to inspire and hook pupils, sparking their imagination and giving purpose to their writing. Drama is woven into our lessons too, giving children the chance to explore characters, settings and emotions in creative and memorable ways. To support fluency and presentation, daily handwriting practice is embedded throughout the school, helping children to develop fine motor skills, stamina and pride in their work. Together, these approaches nurture articulate, imaginative and independent writers who enjoy expressing themselves through the written word.
